Vinteloper's Urban Winery Project is a big deal. Every year, Dave Bowley drives in grapes daily to an urban pop-up winery where they're foot-trodden, fermented, basket-pressed and barrelled by members of the public, with meals cooked by visiting top chefs and everyone having a massive amount of fun. Each vintage's label is created by a different artist (move over Mouton).
It's an inspirational story. And in 2016, Vinteloper popped up in Melbourne to make just a few thousand bottles of this Shiraz-Malbec blend, fruit sourced from Heathcote (Victoria) and Langhorne Creek (South Australia). Guests stomp the grapes by feet, they're put in a traditional basket press, naturally fermented, then Dave puts in oak barrels for 11 months till the wine is released at the subsequent UWP. There are just over one thousand bottles available for the UK, and they always disappear fast. It's umami rich, with BBQ smoke and tomato leaf, ripe black forest fruits, then surprisingly light and supple, toasty oak spice on finish. An incredible wine with incredible provenance.
