Tim Manning is the English winemaker in charge at Valdonica, an organic producer in the high hills of the Maremma, southern Tuscany. Following a stint in a wine shop he went on a whim to Tuscany for some work experience at the famed Riecine winery in Chianti, swiftly rising to become assistant winemaker. There was no looking back from there, and he's since worked in Oregon, New Zealand and created his own range of Italian wines called Vinochisti.
Ballarino is 100% Vermentino from Valdonica's Sassofortino vineyard, planted on volcanic soils around 500 metres above sea level. Vermentino is a Mediterranean grape claimed by several Italian regions as its own, including Tuscany. Whatever the grape's history though, this is one of the best Vermentinos you'll find, the Wein-Plus wine guide even naming it the finest available in Tuscany. Aged for 6 months in stainless steel and 6 months in lightly toasted French oak barrels, it's pure, mineral and brightly flavoured, bolstering richness, the oak a warming supporting act rather than the main show. Truly brilliant, from a low-yielding but high quality vintage for Vermentino, and just 3,800 bottles produced.
