Valdonica is a small organic farm high in the hills of the Maremma, southern Tuscany. These volcanic soils are 500 metres above sea level, and as well as benefiting from that altitude they are cooled by the air off the nearby Mediterranean sea.
This is Arnaio, a blend of Sangiovese and Ciliegiolo, an old Tuscan grape whose name translates as "small cherry", naturally given its cherry flavour. Sangiovese actually developed from Ciliegiolo, but has long vastly overtaken its parent in popularity and prestige. Thankfully, it's quietly making a comeback, especially here in the Maremma and in nearby Liguria. This is naturally fermented in stainless steel, some whole bunches, then moved to a mixture of steel tanks and oak barrels (tiny proportion new) and aged for up to 16 months. Medium bodied, good acidity, cherry and bright plum flavours, grippy tannin and lingering finish
