Tim Manning is the English winemaker in charge at Valdonica, an organic producer in the high hills of the Maremma, southern Tuscany. Following a stint in a wine shop he went on a whim to Tuscany for some work experience at the famed Riecine winery in Chianti, swiftly rising to become assistant winemaker. There was no looking back from there, and he's since worked in Oregon, New Zealand and created his own range of Italian wines called Vinochisti.
This is Arnaio, a blend of Sangiovese and Ciliegiolo, an old Tuscan grape whose name translates as "small cherry", naturally given its cherry flavour. Sangiovese actually developed from Ciliegiolo, but has long vastly overtaken its parent in popularity and prestige. Thankfully, it's quietly making a comeback, especially here in the Maremma and in nearby Liguria. This is naturally fermented in stainless steel, some whole bunches, then moved to a mixture of steel tanks and oak barrels (tiny proportion new) and aged for up to 16 months. Medium bodied, good acidity, cherry and bright plum flavours, grippy tannin and lingering finish. Cracking!
