Black Elephant Vintners was created only a few years ago in Franschhoek by Kevin Swart, Raymond Ndlovu and Jacques Wentzel. Their philosophy is to push the boundaries of conformity in an industry that sometimes forgets how to have fun.
Their maiden 2015 vintage of "Three Men In A Tub" Pinotage (featuring the three fellas in a bathtub on the label) is a blend of three vineyards: the first in Wellington on decomposed granite soils, the second in Stellenbosch on Hutton and Clovelly soils, and the third and most important in Franschhoek, on decomposed granite and sandstone soils. It's fermented naturally in old, large French oak barrels.
This is dark and hefty but not in an ungainly way. Nose is expressive and still youthful, with great fruit concentration on the palate. Tannins still firm but yielding. An irreverent approach yet a serious wine!
