Polperro Mill Hill Chardonnay 2017
Mornington Peninsula, Victoria, Australia
“Great wines are made on the vine, and when the variety, aspect and soil type are right, Australia’s wine regions deliver elegant, textured and fruit-driven wines that hold their own with the best in the world.” Sam Coverdale established Even Keel in 2006 with a vision to create drinkable, elegant wines that celebrate the individual strengths of Australia’s wine regions. Since 2009, he has specialised in single-vineyard wines from his Polperro farm in the higher reaches of the Mornington Peninsula, using a mix of organic and biodynamic viticulture.
The Mill Hill vineyard was planted in 1994 on Arthur's Seat Road, Red Hill, at an altitude of 270 metres. It is the highest and one of the more exposed sites in the region, which ensures a long ripening season and high levels of natural acidity.
Grapes were hand-picked and gentle whole-bunch pressed. Barrel fermentation is natural, including full malolactic fermentation. The wine rests in barrel for 12 months and then transferred to tank with full lees, where it spends another 6 months maturing. It is bottled with neither fining nor filtration.
The finished wine is a show-stopper. It has stacks of natural acidity, it is focused, powerful and textural but above all it is beautifully balanced.
