Petit Xavier Rouge NV
Rhône & Languedoc, France
Syrah 50%, Grenache 50%
Châteauneuf-du-Pape born Xavier Vignon knows the Rhône valley inside out. He spent fifteen years consulting for more than 250 wineries in every nook and cranny of the valley. Combine that with a total of thirty-four vintages in all corners of the globe and this self-styled “terroir hunter” has winemaking experience that few can match. A master of the blend, he has honed his own range of wines by combining tiny parcels of wine, acquired as part-payment for consulting projects. He likes to explore appellations rather than vintages, so unique multi-vintage blends are a feature of his work. “Not a huge fan of oak”, instead he prefers old barrels and concrete, again so as to let the grape’s origins take centre stage.
Petit Xavier Rouge is that classic southern French blend of Syrah and Grenache from select vineyards across the southern Rhône valley and the Languedoc. The grapes are harvested by hand and the wine made only in stainless steel tanks - no oak on this one so think very bright, fresh fruit flavours and a dark, nicely structured underbelly. The nose offers black pepper, raspberries, then violets and there's a long finish to keep you going back for more!
