Paşaeli K2 2017
Seyit Karagözoglu founded Paşaeli in 2000, aiming to revive and celebrate the forgotten native grapes of Turkey, like Karassakiz and Yapincak, but he also makes this jolly lovely Bordeaux blend called K2 that gives many a claret more than a run for its money, and would trump quite a few of them too.
The blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot are from a single vineyard in Kaynaklar near Izmir, and fermented separately before a year ageing in barrel (first and second use French oak).
This is a dark and seriously well made wine, the oak present but providing ballast rather than overriding the joyously tasty fruit. A really inviting, fruit-forward aroma of blueberries and cassis. Sumptuous, surprising and well worth your trying.
