Seyit Karagözoglu founded Paşaeli in 2000, aiming to revive and celebrate the forgotten native grapes of Turkey, like Karassakiz and Yapincak, but he also makes this jolly lovely Bordeaux blend called K2 that gives many a claret more than a run for its money, and would trump quite a few of them too.
The grapes are from a single vineyard in Kaynaklar near Izmir, then fermented separately before a year ageing in barrel (second use French oak). This is dark and brooding, the oak present but providing ballast rather than overriding the joyously tasty fruit.
"Really something to get your teeth into and to take to the table, so appetising. And there's a hint of dry dark chocolate of the kind that leaves your mouth clean despite the dry firm tannins. Really appetising" - 17.5 points - Julia Harding MW for jancisrobinson.com
