The Algarve conjures up many images to the British. Blue skies, beaches and golf aplenty; wine that stops you in its tracks, less so!

Filipe Vasconcellos wants to change your mind. His wines certainly turned our heads, and we’re confident they’ll turn yours. Filipe’s mission is to rescue ancient Algarve grapes grown at the property he inherited from his mother, who resisted advice to plant better-known international varieties. Filipe has followed her lead and is planting more vines alongside those his grandparents planted more than 60 years ago, a short distance from the Atlantic. The wines are idiosyncratically authentic, championing old styles like palhete and clarete, and are made by Joana Maçanita, sister of António Maçanita, founder of the Azores Wine Company.

This old-school red is relatively light for what you'd expect from Portugal, with intensely juicy fruit and crunchy texture. Amazing aroma that grabs you instantly and invites you to take another sip. Made from old Tinta Negra Mole, it's an utter, utter delight.
