Mira do Ó Druida Tinto 2016
Jaén 50%, Touriga Nacional 50%
Nuno Mira do Ó is the winemaker behind Druida, Vidente and V Puro, wines from the historic Dão, Bucelas and Bairrada regions of Portugal.
The Druida wines hark back to the ancient Celtic druids, wise men and philosophers who sought spiritual equilibrium between man and nature, and it's in a similar spirit that Nuno aims to make his wine. Grapes for these are grown by Nuno Matos at Quinta da Turquide in Silgueiros at an altitude of 500 metres on granite-rich soils and subject to a large temperature shifts as a result of the Serra do Caramulo from the west and Serra da Estrela from the south-east.
Druida Tinto truly is a fifty-fifty blend of Jaén and Touriga Nacional hand-harvested and naturally fermented in the traditional lagar (granite troughs), with 30 per cent stems included (this can bring a herbaceous freshness to the wine). Malolactic fermentation occurs naturally in French oak barrels (50 per cent new) and the wine is aged in barrels for 20 months before bottling.
It's a show-stopper. Bright ruby colour and a nose of black pepper, cinnamon, cherries and violet flowers that are a hallmark of Touriga Nacional. Really elegant, silky tannins. All in all, a typical top-notch red wine of the Dão region.
