Bobal has always been grown in vast quantities in its native Spain, but for cheap, bulk red and rosé wines. Only recently have growers had the confidence to make more ambitious Bobal reds from old vines, and with awesome results. Sebi Mancebo's organic vineyards are in the small village of Sinarcas, on an 800-metre high plateau inland from Valencia (see the image below of old Bobal bush vines under snow!). His big thing is Bobal, but we were totally won over by this curious Gewürztraminer! Curious, why? Because Gewürz is typically planted in cooler climates like Austria or Alsace in France; being relatively low in acidity it can get a bit gloopy in hotter areas.
Sebi's careful management and the growing conditions - hot days but very cool nights, essential for letting the grapes calm down and not get too ripe - mean what you've got here is an utter triumph. Lovely aroma of rose petals and lychees, some lavender, then a dry, citrus and spice taste and lingering finish. Try it! Even if you're not a Gewürz fan, we think you'll be pleasantly surprised, and there are few white wines better paired with spicier Asian cuisine.
