Loveblock Central Otago Pinot Noir 2019
Central Otago, New Zealand
Perched high in the hills overlooking Marlborough's Awatere Valley, Loveblock feels a world away from the agricultural hustle & bustle below. Kim and Erica Crawford acquired this wild and untamed patch of land in 2004 and have turned their organic Loveblock farm into a haven of biodiversity. It is here they make a Sauvignon Blanc of constrained elegance and an emphasis on texture. Meanwhile in Central Otago, Kim and Erica farm five different clones of Pinot Noir close to Bendigo, in the warmer climes of this most southerly wine region.
Their Pinot Noir is from free-draining, sandy loam over schist alluvial gravels known as Molyneux soils. For Pinot geeks, the clones planted are B777, B667, B115, Clone 5 (Pommard) and Abel. The first few (Dijon) clones provide floral notes, while Abel and Pommard bring structure.
The grapes were pumped straight to tank without crushing to leave some stems and whole berries. Natural fermentation in tank, followed by full malolactic fermentation then eight months maturation before bottling.
This lovely crimson Pinot Noir has ripe black cherry, smoky, mushroom aromas that reveal flavours of black plum, lots of cherry and notes of violet. Dry tannins and plush fruit, a classically Otago Pinot.
