Leonardo Bussoletti Ramici 2014
Winemaker Leonardo Bussoletti is in the vanguard of Ciliegiolo revival, working with the University of Milan since 2009 to identify thirty different clones of this ancient grape variety and parent of Sangiovese. Leonardo has nine hectares of organic vineyards in Narni. The local clone, Ciliegiolo di Narni, is now found all over Italy.
The Ciliegiolo is grown on north-facing, calcareous clay soils. This terroir achieves elegance rather than power in the wine. Yields are also kept low.
This is barnstorming Cilieigolo from a master at the top of his game. Naturally fermented, it was matured in large vats and barrels for 24 months. The colour is a delicate, developed shade of red and there is a deep aroma of black cherries, spice and balsamic notes. Dark fruit flavours on the palate, more spice and a very long finish.
