Leonardo Bussoletti Breccario 2017
Winemaker Leonardo Bussoletti is in the vanguard of Ciliegiolo revival, working with the University of Milan since 2009 to identify thirty different clones of this ancient grape variety and parent of Sangiovese. Leonardo has nine hectares of organic vineyards in Narni. The local clone, Ciliegiolo di Narni, is now found all over Italy.
The Ciliegiolo for Breccario is grown on north-facing, calcareous clay soils. This terroir achieves elegance rather than power in the wine. Yields are also kept low. Just over two-thirds of this wine are fermented in stainless steel, the remainder in old French oak barrels.
It has classic Ciliegiolo flavours. The grape gets its name from the Italian for "cherries" and this is what hits you first, along with cranberry and herbs to go with tight, structured tannin. A gorgeous and important wine!
