Hobby Antão Vaz 2018
Hobby is a passion project for two renowned Portuguese winemakers, Diogo Campilho and Pedro Pinhão, who after working around the New World decided to return home to start their own winery. They source grapes from sustainably farmed vineyards in Alentejo, whose hot continental climate has some maritime influence from the Atlantic.
Antão Vaz is a native white grape that thrives in the arid conditions and is often likened to Chardonnay for its adaptability and its affinity to oak ageing.
For their Hobby Antão Vaz, grapes are hand-picked and the wine is aged in French oak barrels for 6 months with battonage, giving it plenty of depth and breadth of flavour. You get complex floral aromas with some vanilla from the oak ageing as well as buttery popcorn. The palate is plump yet freshly balanced with toasty vanilla to the fore.
