This young grower, whose family has been making wine since 1800, farms twenty-one hectares of vineyards in Gols (where wine has been made for two thousand years, and was part of Hungary till 1921) in the Pannonian basin with its hot, dry summers and lengthy ripening season.
The nearby Lake Neusiedl moderating the climate throughout the year, and strong winds aerating the vineyards. The gravelly soils were created from deposits from the receding Pannonian sea, and offer excellent drainage. Since 2010, Andreas has farmed biodynamically and is a member of Respekt, a group of “young, dynamic and non- dogmatic” winemakers in Austria, Germany and Hungary.
Zu Tisch Rot is a superbly aged, dark, brooding blend of Blaufränkisch and St Laurent, planted on mostly sandy soils with a high iron content, mixed with loam and limestone on top of the Danube River gravel that covers the entire region. Fermentation is in a mixture of 500-litre oak barrels and stainless steel tanks, then matured in similarly old 500-litre oak barrels for 15 months. The oak doesn't influence the flavour of the wine, just helps integrate acidity and tannins.
