A Catholic monastery making wines since 1673 (in a place with vineyards dating back to the 12th century), extreme terroir in some of the northernmost vineyards in Europe, and a young Australian winemaker (the only one in this neck of the woods) with big ideas: mix it all together and you have Kloster Ebernach. Orange wines are de rigeur, though rather alien to Mosel Riesling. Martin's orange Riesling is a departure into the unknown. What we love is that unlike many orange wines, which owe their flavours more to the winemaking process than grape or terroir, this wine has more than a hint of top quality Riesling to it. Bone dry, and would be great to drink with strong-flavoured pork or chicken dishes, perhaps also with oriental dishes featuring Chinese five spice.
