De Kleine Wijn Koöp Ou Treffer 2017
‘N nuwe sort van Suid-Afrikaanse wynprodusent. Die Kleine Wijn Koöp is a collaboration between some young blokes, making bona fide African wines from around the Cape, and having a massive amount of fun. This is Ou Treffer - the 'old hit' in Afrikaans, referring to the grape Cinsault (spelt Cinsaut here) being the old workhorse hit of the Cape. This is from the second oldest Cinsault vineyard in Stellenbosch, planted in 1952. It is almost morbidly low yielding, just half a tonne per hectare (see the spread-out bush vines in the image below).
Grapes were picked by hand on 8th March 2016, we quote - "International Women's Day and, incidentally, the birthday of Dawson's Creek star James van der Beek", as well as DKWK founder Janneman Solm. Only the very best grapes make their way to natural fermentation in open-topped tanks, then it was aged in a single big old French oak barrel. Just 620 bottles made, and fewer than 200 made their way to the UK.
"Making wines that are every bit as stylish as their labels, this small collaborative venture favours lighter, fresher more elegant reds. This floral, sappy, stemmy Cinsaut is a case in point, showing supple raspberry sweetness and good acidity." - Tim Atkin MW, 90 points.
