‘N nuwe sort van Suid-Afrikaanse wynprodusent. Die Kleine Wijn Koöp is a collaboration between some young blokes, making bona fide African wines from around the Cape, and having a massive amount of fun. Hoendertande is Afrikaans for hen’s teeth, because the grapes used for this wine as just as rare. Piekenierskloof – or Pikemen’s Valley – is a high altitude pass in the Swartland up towards the Olifantsrivier Valley. The small region is prized for its Grenache but it is in extremely short supply. The guys sourced these from a low-yielding vineyard planted in the early 2000s, hand-harvesting on 12th February 2016, in what was a very hot and dry vintage. Whole bunch fermentation in open-topped fermenters, with twice daily punch-downs for 10 days, then transferred from basket press directly to a single old 500-litre French oak barrel for 9 months. Just 620 bottles made, and fewer than 200 made their way to the UK.
"Like the Cinsaut from this youthful venture, the almost unpronounceable Hoendertrande [sic] is a Grenache for Pinot lovers, emphasising delicacy, pale colour and approachable summer berry flavours over extraction or tannin. Poised, fragrant and a pleasure to drink." - Tim Atkin MW, 91 points.
