Cossetti Gelsomora Grignolino d'Asti 2019
Clementina Cossetti is the fourth-generation winemaker at the 30-hectare San Colombano estate in the heart of Asti, where her family has been farming for well over a century. It was in 1891 that Giovanni Cossetti first built a winery, and his son Clemente began achieving wider renown for their wines in the early years of the twentieth century. Within the current vineyards, where vines are on average 30-years-old, the yields are kept low and historically Barbera has performed exceptionally.
Their Gelsomora Grignolino d'Asti is a real find. The Grignolino grape is native to Piedmont but pretty obscure and not well-travelled. It takes its name from the local word for grape pips because of the abundance of seeds it contains. These contribute to high tannins but the wines are also generally fairly light in body, the sort of red that in hotter months can happily be chilled.
This wine is made only in stainless steel, no oak. It is a slightly pale ruby colour, intensely fruity aromas with floral notes. Enveloping and fresh with noticeable tannins it takes you off in many different places and is an absolutely fascinating as well as absolutely delicious, unique red wine.
