American grad Jennifer took a trip to France fifteen years ago, met a boy, and very much stayed. That boy's family tended vines, and after a bit of viticultural globetrotting, Jennifer and Didier settled down in his home town of Douzens, surrounded by the Corbières hills. Among the loveliest people on the planet, their nine small plots of organic vineyards include the oldest vineyard in the village, planted in the latter years of the 19th century.
That half-hectare vineyard is La Joupatière, whose vines managed to survive the phylloxera blight of the early part of last century, which devastated much of France's vineyards. It has also defeated a local ampelographer. A field blend of fifteen grapes, three remain unidentified. It's just the sort of rarity we go giddy for at Red Squirrel, with all those rare grapes and just 400 or so bottles produced every year. Jennifer & Didier refuse to release their wines before they believe they're ready, so all the beneficial ageing has been done for you and it is good to go. A very rich yet elegant wine of astonishing complexity, and very much a living piece of history in a glass. Incredible.
