American grad Jennifer took a trip to France fifteen years ago, met a boy, and very much stayed. That boy's family tended vines, and after a bit of viticultural globetrotting, Jennifer and Didier settled down in his home town of Douzens, surrounded by the Corbières hills. Among the loveliest people on the planet, their nine small plots of organic vineyards include the oldest vineyard in the village, planted in the latter years of the 19th century.
Carignan 1515 is a very special thing indeed. Clearly it's Carignan, one of the world's greatest yet most under-appreciated grapes. But good Carignan wine needs good old vines, and Jennifer & Didier have some of the oldest Carignan vines in the region. Here you've got two plots of vines, one 89-years-old, t'other 65-years-old. The former is fermented normally (in steel), the latter undergoes carbonic maceration (what they do in Beaujolais, producing fresher, fruitier flavours). One-quarter of the finished blend is aged in neutral oak barrels for eight months. It's a complex, brilliant number. Deep garnet, tobacco and bay leaves, mocha, blackberries and kirsch. Gorgeous.
