Château de Bel Achille Montagne Saint-Émilion 2016
Olivier Cazenave is the most radical winegrower in Bordeaux. Multi-vintage bottlings, biodynamic farming, avant-garde packaging...in so many ways Olivier is re-imagining what is possible in this historic French wine region.
This beautifully proper Pomerol comes from the Clos du Canton des Ormeaux, a special 0.7-hectare plot in what was the back garden of Olivier's grandfather's cooperage. The original cooperage is now used as a secondary cellar, making this not a garage wine but a workshop wine! The vineyard is on clay-silty soils, over gravel and marl, with some limestone and ferrous material too. The biodynamic Merlot grapes are hand-picked then fermented naturally in 500-litre open oak barrels. The wine is super-textural, rounded, with extremely silky tannins. The fruit unfurls subtly, then opens up wonderfully with accentuated floral perfume throughout. Quite marvellous really. And it comes in a proper wooden box like the posh claret in your great-uncle's cellar...
