Brothers Koerner Pinot Noir 2019
Adelaide Hills, South Australia
Brothers Koerner is the new Adelaide Hills project of brothers Damo & Jono Koerner (see Koerner wines), recently crowned 'Young Guns of Wine' in Australia. This young duo grew up in the Clare Valley under the tutelage of a grape-growing father and so have a keen appreciation of the old adage that 'wine is made in the vineyard'. The Adelaide Hills offer prime conditions for the kind of new wave, fresh wines these guys love to make.
The Pinot Noir is from Coulter Vineyard in Lenswood and Hersey Vineyard in Kuipot, planted in 2000 and 1997 respectively on sandy loam and limestone. Everything was hand harvested and sorted, then naturally fermented in open top stainless steel tanks. The wine was aged in a combination of ceramic amphora and large, 2000-litre Slavonian oak barrels for 3 months, then tank again for another 7 months. This variety of vessels gives the wine layers of texture.
Just 600 cases produced and it's a gorgeous, classic Pinot Noir, showcasing what the Adelaide Hills are about with its altitude and cooler temperatures. Red fruits to the fore - think wild strawberries - then an earthy underbelly. So delicious.
