Bellwether Ant Series Tempranillo 2017
Sue Bell was voted Australian Society of Viticulture & Oenology Winemaker of the Year in 2014, and her negociant-style micro-winery in Coonawarra works with grapes sourced from passionate growers in diverse regions of Australia.
Tempranillo may seem an unusual grape to find in Australia, but it's one of the more prevalent "alternatives", with plenty of examples available domestically and increasingly abroad. While it is certainly at home in hot, dry conditions, the absolute key to Tempranillo is finding the right site, and in Wrattonbully we've found a hidden gem. Tempranillo loves cooler climates (think prestigious Rioja Alta) and limestone soils, and it's these that give Wrattonbully the edge over hotter Aussie regions.
Sue sources this brilliant fruit from old friend Peter Bird, and with it produces a vibrantly aromatic, textured and lively Tempranillo. Quite probably Australia's very best.
