Bellwether Ant Series Shiraz-Malbec 2016
Sue Bell was voted Australian Society of Viticulture & Oenology Winemaker of the Year in 2014, and her negociant-style micro-winery in Coonawarra works with grapes sourced from passionate growers in diverse regions of Australia.
This unusual Shiraz & Malbec blend comes from Wrattonbully, a relatively cool climate small area of South Australia next to Coonawarra. Vineyards are planted along limestone ridges that used to form the coastline along what is now the World Heritage listed Limestone Coast. The first vines were planted here in 1885, but it wasn't till the 1990s that the region's full potential was recognised and the number of vineyards mushroomed rapidly.
Sue makes this red wine with entirely whole bunches for texture, also making it so much fresher than you'd expect from the two grapes involved. Earthy undertones, lifted, spicy aromatics, and juicy plump fruit make it a joy to behold.
