Sue Bell was voted the Australian Society of Viticulture & Oenology Winemaker of the Year in 2014, and her micro-winery in Coonawarra works with grapes sourced from passionate growers in diverse regions of Australia. There are classics as well as oddities and very alternative varieties, like Bianco d'Alessano from the Ricca Terra farm in Riverland. This rare Puglian variety loves hot, arid conditions, apt therefore for Sue's "Ant Series" wines, which communicate the ongoing challenge posed by climate change. There's only one block of vines grown in Australia.
It's a fascinating white grape, textural almost to the point of tannic. Very pale lemon colour, aroma of hay, grass and fresh corn tortilla. Savoury herbs, floral honey, dry and smooth at the same time. A mineral salty finish. So, so cool. The grape is thick-skinned and slow ripening. Those skins give it grip here, and as Sue tells us, "I've never seen tannins like this in a white variety."
