Now here's something a bit different. Isabella isn't technically even allowed within the EU, because it's an old American grape variety: a crossing of two species, Vitis labrusca and Vitis vinifera. EU regulations only permit the latter. But Antonio Maçanita fervently believes in continuing to grow the grape and make wine from it because of its important position in Azores islands history.
When a destructive cocktail of phylloxera and oidium hit the Azores in the 1850s, the islands' traditional wine industry was decimated. American varieties like Isabella are resistant to phylloxera, so continued to be planted and used by locals.
What does this illicit red wine taste like? Nothing you've ever had before, probably. Especially fruity, with tart red fruit like cranberries, alongside grape jam and an undercurrent of aniseed. It is light-to-medium bodied, long, and endlessly fascinating. Curiously, a synonym is Dorchester.
