Ahrens Family The White Black 2017
Voor-Paardeberg, Western Cape, South Africa
Roussanne, Marsanne, Grenache Blanc
Albert drives up to 40,000km every year between a plethora of vineyards in the Cape, sourcing only the very best grapes for his growing range of tiny-batch wines. One of the early voices of the Swartland revolution while winemaker at Lammershoek, Albert has remained quietly and confidently under the radar building his own projects, while also gaining experience abroad in Priorat, the Rhône valley and Champagne.
The White Black is a white wine from the black lands, the Swartland. An old-school Rhône blend from old vines in the Voor-Paardeberg, a granite formation on the southern edge of the Swartland and now its own Wine of Origin. Hand-picked, naturally fermented and matured in 300 to 600-litre tight-grain French oak barrels for 12 months. It's so impressive. Medium-bodied, peach and citrus fruit, layer upon layer upon layer of texture and flavour, wet stone mineral coolness and very long on the finish. Take a bow!
