Albert drives up to 40,000km every year between a plethora of vineyards in the Cape, sourcing only the very best grapes for his growing range of tiny-batch wines. One of the early voices of the Swartland revolution while winemaker at Lammershoek, Albert has remained quietly and confidently under the radar building his own projects, while also gaining experience abroad in Priorat, the Rhône valley and Champagne.
The "O.V.C." stands for Old Vine Chenin, and that's because it comes from the second-oldest Chenin Blanc vines in South Africa, a single plot planted in the Bottelary hills in 1947. Grapes were hand-harvested in three stages: 20% early for freshness, 60% at optimum ripeness, and 20% much later for rich, ripe flavours. Naturally fermented and matured in old, 225 to 400-litre tight-grain French oak barrels for 12 months, leaving a touch of residual sugar in as a nod to the great Chenins of Vouvray. It has striking perfume of stone fruit that really hits you. Full-on, mouth-coating and lingering, more fruit and floral flavours, some melon and tropical fruit, hint of spice at the back. Really long. Sumptuous stuff. Just 1,200 bottles made and 600 remain.
