English wine. Winegrowing is being born and re-born anew the world over, to thrilling results, but no fledgling region in the world can grasp the imagination quite as much as your own, can it? It may have been what the Romans did for us, once upon a time, and thrived through the early modern era in places such as Richmond – which still bears a street known as the Vineyard, close to the site of our founder’s fruitless first foray into winegrowing – but the industry as we know it is a young, rousing endeavour.
And few endeavours can be younger, or more inspiring, than Black Chalk, a labour of love from award-winning winemaker Jacob Leadley and family, with the eagerly-awaited inaugural 2015 vintage wines released in April 2018, with top-quality grapes picked only from vineyards on the chalk downlands of Hampshire.
There's the traditional triptych of grapes here but an unusually high proportion of Pinot Meunier, a red grape Jacob believes is particularly suited to Hampshire. Fermentation in barrels and stainless steel tank then in bottle as is traditional, where the wine aged on lees for a minimum of 20 months before disgorgement. It's such a multi-layered pink fizz, with strawberries and raspberries to the fore, subtle autolytic character and a familiarly crisp, clean English finish.
