Black Chalk Classic 2015
English wine. Winegrowing is being born and re-born anew the world over, to thrilling results, but no fledgling region in the world can grasp the imagination quite as much as your own, can it? It may have been what the Romans did for us, once upon a time, and thrived through the early modern era in places such as Richmond – which still bears a street known as the Vineyard, close to the site of our founder’s fruitless first foray into winegrowing – but the industry as we know it is a young, rousing endeavour.
And few endeavours can be younger, or more inspiring, than Black Chalk, a labour of love from award-winning winemaker Jacob Leadley and family, with the eagerly-awaited inaugural 2015 vintage wines released in April 2018. Exceptional fruit is sourced entirely from vineyards in Hampshire, a quintessentially English landscape Jacob knows well, having been making world-class sparkling wines at Hattingley Valley since 2011.
There's the traditional triptych of grapes here but an unusually high proportion of Pinot Meunier, a red grape Jacob believes is particularly suited to Hampshire. Fermentation partly in barrel, then the traditional secondary fermentation in bottle, where the wine aged for two years on lees before disgorgement. There's prominent fruit, a real touch of class with rich autolysis, and classic English green apple with floral notes.
"I reckon this is one of the best UK sparklers out there. So delicate with purity and balance. World class." Jamie Goode, December 2018
