Ah, Pinotage. It's been the best of times, it's been the worst of times. This oft-maligned South African creation perhaps still has more detractors than it has fans. And in my experience for good reason. There are some frightful Pinotages out there, teeming with volatile acidity - which prompts nail varnish aromas - and clumsily over-extracted, creating burnt rubber flavours. Though the first vintage of Pinotage was produced in 1941, it has taken winemakers a long time to come to terms with this high-cropping crossing of Pinot Noir and Cinsaut. But trust me, there are now some utterly fantastic Pinotages available, from South African growers with old vines and fine skills.
