Seyit Karagözoglu founded Paşaeli in 2000, aiming to revive and celebrate the forgotten native grapes of Turkey, like this Kolorko, a grape native to Sarköy in Thrace (so the 'Greek or European side' of Turkey).
The Kolorko comes from Seyit's own coastal vineyards in Sarköy, painstakingly grafted in recent years on to older vines. Pressed as whole clusters then kept on lees for three months, stirring twice a week to build complex layers. The record crop in 2017 of 524 kilos meant....drum roll...a grand total of 277 bottles. That literally is it.
The wine has such impressive intensity and length, bouncing from light and stony, to deep and rich, and back again, with much in between. Extraordinary.
"This is the Pasaeli wine I most look forward to every year because it was the one that really brought them to my attention when we were writing Wine Grapes. And I know how hard it has been for them to get the grapes. Like other Turkish varieties that Seyit has rescued, it is really hard to describe because it is so different from the typical aromas and flavours of the varieties that dominate the world of wine. Well done!" - 17 points - Julia Harding MW for jancisrobinson.com
