The Algarve conjures up many images to the British. Blue skies, beaches and golf aplenty; wine that stops you in its tracks, less so!
Filipe Vasconcellos wants to change your mind. His wines certainly turned our heads, and we’re confident they’ll turn yours. Filipe’s mission is to rescue ancient Algarve grapes grown at the property he inherited from his mother, who resisted advice to plant better-known international varieties. Filipe has followed her lead and is planting more vines alongside those his grandparents planted more than 60 years ago, a short distance from the Atlantic. The wines are idiosyncratically authentic, championing old styles like palhete and clarete.
The white is from old Crato Branco vines (a grape that's also known elsewhere as Roupeiro and is part of the wider Malvasía family), and raised in 50% stainless steel tank and 50% French oak barrels, where it rests for 6-8 months. Light yellow colour, on the nose vibrant pineapple and green grass, notes of sea. The palate is mineral, tense and full bodied.
