Viñedos del Jorco Las Cabañuelas 2017
Sierra de Gredos, Spain
Viñedos del Jorco was established in Cebreros by renowned winemaker, viticulturist and consultant Raúl Pérez (pictured), together with César Ruiz, Flequi Berruti and Nacho Jiménez, four of Spain's top winemakers.
Raúl was attracted to a 2.5-hectare vineyard planted in 1915, whose grapes were being sold to Paraje del Jorco. They farmed this plot biodynamically for five years before purchasing it in 2016.
The Garnacha here is incredible and the Sierra de Gredos area, just a short distance west of Madrid, is one of Spain's hidden gems. Old Garnacha vines are found at elevations of 600-1,200 metres above sea level, on granitic, sandy soils and a lot of slate around the village of Cebreros itself.
The grapes are hand-harvested then naturally fermented in 10,000-litre old oak foudres. Minimal added sulfites at bottling.
This is intensely fragrant, pleasantly fruity to taste and with a gentle minerally undercurrent. It finishes lively and direct, very fresh.
