Combel-la-Serre De La Terre à La Lune 2017
The Ilbert family has been tending vines in Cahors since 1901 and bottling their own wines since 2005. Now Julien & Sophie Ilbert farm 22 hectares on the highest reaches of la causse, the old Occitan word for Cahors' limestone plateau.
This is a real curiosity for Cahors, a Vermentino white wine from a single hectare of north-facing vines on la causse limestone. The Cahors appellation doesn't allow for white wines so the Ilberts have to classify this as IGP Côtes du Lot, but this matters not a...jot. Sorry.
Grapes are organically farmed and hand-harvested then naturally fermented in stainless steel. It is full, round, with a bright, tingling saline edge to it so classic of good Vermentino, launching into complex layers of fruit and texture. A curiosity for sure, and a triumphant curiosity at that.
