Friulano, under its synonyms Sauvignonasse or Sauvignon Vert, is supposedly an old white grape from southwest France although it was rarely cultivated there. Its proper home as the name suggests is in Friuli and across the border into Slovenia. In Italy it was called Tocai Fruilano but this has been outlawed for being too similar to 'Tokaji'.
Curious fact: in Chile many of the original plantings of Sauvignon Blanc have been found to be Sauvignonasse and while many vines have been replanted, the Chileans are still allowed to label their Sauvignonasse as Sauvignon Blanc.
