Emilia-Romagna is a fascinating region famed for its gastronomy and food culture (it's the home of the Slow Food movement), with wine obviously important too but sometimes overlooked for more recognisable regions, not least neighbouring Tuscany.

For instance it's most famous export, Lambrusco, perhaps is recognised more often as a 'brand' in itself rather than of the region. But while Emilia-Romagna perhaps lacks many recognisable appellations and produces many wine grapes and styles, it always rewards exploration. It does the 'classics' well too, especially Sangiovese, a grape it is thought might have originated here.
