Elgin Valley
The Elgin Valley is tucked into the Hottentots-Holland mountains south-east of Stellenbosch. It is relatively small as a winegrowing area but increasingly important. They grow nearly two-thirds of South Africa's apple exports here and the cooler climate - thanks to 250-400 metres of altitude and proximity to the ocean - is proving as good for wine grapes as orchard fruit, prompting winemakers to focus on varieties like Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
