Chile has carved out a reputation for making reliable, inexpensive, tasty red and white wines from well-known French grapes like Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as lesser-known Bordeaux grape Carmenère (which for years Chilean growers thought was Merlot).
This reputation is changing, as intrepid Chilean producers seek out new vineyard sites in a country blessed with varied terrains and micro-climates. Keep your eyes peeled over the coming years for new, ambitious Chilean wines from regions like Elqui in the far north, and  Limarí or Bio Bio in the far south.
