De Kleine Wijn Koöp Heimwee 2015
‘N nuwe sort van Suid-Afrikaanse wynprodusent. Die Kleine Wijn Koöp is a collaboration between some young blokes, making bona fide African wines from around the Cape, and having a massive amount of fun.
This is a very limited-edition Cabernet Sauvignon from the Polkadraai Hills, west of Stellenbosch. The vineyard was planted in 2000 and is farmed biodynamically by Rosa Kruger and Johan Reyneke. Natural fermentation, and aged for more than a year in old 225-litre French oak barrels.
It is so refined, almost Old World in attach, with a warming reminder on the mid-palate of its true home. Appropriate enough really, because "Heimwee" is Afrikaans for "homesick". Supple and soft, with an angular structure that fades in and out, making it an ever-evolving, fascinating red wine. Just 600 bottles made, and fewer than 100 made their way to the UK.
