Black Elephant Vintners Amazing Grace Cabernet Sauvignon 2015
The guys at Black Elephant Vintners have become expert grape sleuths, unearthing some of the finest tucked-away parcels of grapse in the Franschhoek valley. It's perhaps little known that they have a pretty fine parcel of their own, not far from the heart of the village and Kevin's farm, La Petite Vigne. This Cabernet Sauvignon is from two blocks planted in 1999 and 2003, on a south-facing gentle granite slope. The grapes are picked by hand in the first half of March, then the wine made on-site in their diminutive winery.
Open-top fermentation, then ageing in barrels for about two years (half new French oak, half second-fill). It's a knockout, classic Cabernet Sauvignon. Everything feels so effortless, as good Cab should. Nothing forced, nothing overpowering. You get a whack of blackcurrant fruit, some grippy tannins and enveloping smokiness. A really special wine and just over two thousand bottles made per year from this special little Franschhoek vineyard.
