Bonarda is the name for four different grapes, three of which are grown in Italy. Also known as Charbono and originating in the Savoie region of France, although very little is now grown there, Bonarda shares many similarities with Barbera. Its wines tend to have high acidity and lots of red berry fruit and blueberry aromas. Where it differs is that the tannins can often be high (although often very fine) and the wines are much deeper in colour.
