Combel-la-Serre La Vigne Juste Derrière Chez Carbo 2017
Organic Cahors Malbec with a very big difference. It's called La vigne juste derrière chez Carbo because Julien sources the grapes from a small, 1.35-hectare plot just behind his mate Carbo's (short for Carbonier) house. Vines are on average 35-years-old and planted on red clay and limestone, with big galets (pebbles) on the surface. It's north-facing and fairly cool. The situation produces fresh, fruity Malbec, so Julien decided to make this cuvée with the carbonic maceration technique most famously used in Beaujolais.
Hence this wine is IGP Côtes du Lot rather than AOC Cahors, but ignore the 'downgrading' in appellation - it's a jolly brilliant wine. Juicy, supple, spicy and refreshing, it takes Julien's Pur Fruit du Causse, itself already pretty fresh, to another level of vin de soif. Just 7,500 bottles made.
